Beijing’s subway system saw a 10% drop in passengers on the first day of a fare hike Sunday compared with the same period last week, South China Morning Post reported, citing a statement from the Beijing government. The two-yuan flat fare for all journeys, launched in 2007, came to an end as a reform in the capital’s over-subsided public transport came into effect. Under the new pricing scheme, passengers are charged more the farther they go. According to an online survey by People’s Daily last year, 60% of people were against a fare increase. Transport authorities had earlier blamed the low fare for the large number of commuters travelling during peak hours.
