  • The shot across the bows that was the Bush administration's 2006 Economic Report is likely to be followed by increased pressure on China over its huge trade surplus and the snail's pace of its currency revaluation. As the US congressional elections loom ever closer, politicians will get nervous about facing voters without even an anti-China quote to their names to allay concerns about job security. Europe is unlikely to waste time joining in the tub-thumping over the "loss" of jobs to China and "unfair" exchange rates. In short, protectionism is in the air.
