Follow the “Dos” and “Don’ts” of any networking occasion

DON’T…

Ignore people. Step away from the wall
Gorge yourself at a cocktail party
Ramble on about yourself and forget to listen to others
Underestimate anyone. You never know when you are in the presence of a master
Lie about yourself. People can smell a fake

DO…

Meet people – as many as you can handle
Find a way to organize your contacts for easy reference later on
Leave home with plenty of business cards, pen and paper
Follow up regularly with contacts and friends. Send emails and notes, but the best way is, almost always, to call in person
Take the time to listen and pay attention to who’s speaking. Networking isn’t just meeting people, its learning about them as well
