Chinese President speaks for women's lib
17 March 2010Chinese President Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, urged Chinese women to contribute more to the country's development and modernization on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the International Women's Day.
Chinese President Hu Jintao said Party committees and governments at all levels should resolutely carry out the basic state policy of equality between men and women, eliminate discrimination against women, and crack down on violations of women's rights in light with law.
People's Daily Online reported that Hu stressed that women's equal rights of political participation, equal participation in economic and social development, and equal access to benefits brought by economic development must be protected.

9 March 2010Wen Jiabao, presenting the Central Government’s work report to some 3,000 delegates who attended the 11th annual session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), said, “The great motherland will always remain a strong supporter of Hong Kong and Macau.”
The Chinese Prime Minister said Macau and Hong Kong can always count on “strong support” of China to ensure their “sustainable prosperity.”
At the end of the document, the reading of which lasted nearly two hours, Wen Jiabao said the Chinese Central Government “fully supports” the policies of Hong Kong and Macau to “maintain a lasting prosperity and stability” of the two Special Administrative Regions.
Macau Daily Times reported that Wen Jiabao said: “We will support Macau in the development of its tourism industry and leisure and appropriate diversification of its economy.”
Political advisors and climate change
5 March 2010Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a political advisory body, asked political advisers to come up with some answers to climate change as he presided over a lecture given to the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.
Xie Zhenhua, Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks, gave committee members a lecture about key climate change issues and China's stands on them.
Jia said while the global climate change is a major challenge for all countries, China's handling of the issue could impact on the country's overall economic and social development as well as the people's interests.
EnglishNews.cn reports Jia asked the members to conduct further studies in accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode, industrial and energy structure, and controlling greenhouse gas emissions so as to offer advice to help the country to cope with problems in its development.
