Gmail accounts hit in China-based cyber attack

Google (GOOG.NYSE, GOOG.NASDAQ, GGQ1.FWB) said Wednesday that it had uncovered a cyber spying campaign originating in China that targeted the Gmail accounts of senior US officials, military personnel, journalists and Chinese political activists, AFP reported. The goal of the campaign, which appeared to come from Jinan, was to monitor the contents of these users' emails by using stolen passwords. Google's security team engineering director Eric Grosse said the company has "disrupted this campaign", notified victims and secured their accounts. An unnamed US official said the White House had no reason to believe that the accounts of senior government officials were hacked, but it was investigating the situation.
