Serving the Sophisticated Chinese Tourists

The Seychelles, with its scattered jewels of 115 islands set in tropical seas and possessing some of the world’s most prized beaches, has long had the reputation as the best place for a honeymoon, but it is now extending its pitch to encompass the needs of the largest up-and-coming market for all global tourist destinations, China.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board, (STB), Mrs Sherin Francis, said that building visibility in the China market is a priority.

“For the longest time, we have attracted romance,
honeymooners, people who came for renewal of vows, couples who came on holiday retreats,” Mrs Francis said. “The brand Seychelles has always been synonymous with romance. But at the end of the day you cannot put all your eggs in one basket. We are growing in terms of MICE – Meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions – and we have also found a niche for fishing, spa tourism and healthy yoga retreats.”

The special experience of the Seychelles – small islands, a tranquil multi-cultural scene – is the selling point in China. “Our strategies are different from other island destinations. We offer something completely unique,” Mrs Francis said. “We look at the quality of our Chinese visitors, quality always comes first. For us, at the end of the day, it’s about attracting those Chinese that can really relate to the destination.”
