Mongolia presses for more investment

1 February 2002

The prime minister of Mongolia, Nambaryn Enkhbayar, went a six-day official visit to China in January, seeking to bolster economic ties with his country's southern neighbour. He said he wanted to increase the amount of foreign investment in mineral-rich Mongolia. China has so far invested more than US$140m in Mongolia, more than any other country.

"We are ready to work with China on whatever project is economically effective," he said. "We have the copper and iron that Chinese companies need for their products."
