Party disciplines corrupt cadres

China's Communist Party disciplined 175,364 officials in 2001 for a wide range of crimes including corruption and bribery, Reuters reported. This was a rise of 29 per cent on the previous year.

Among those disciplined by the party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection were 6,076 county heads, 497 department heads and 16 provincial leaders including Li Jiating, a former governor of Yunnan who resigned his post earlier this year. Between January and November 2001, the commission disciplined more than 1,400 officials for accepting bribes totalling Yn250m.
