CAAC imposes safety restrictions

Passenger jets not equipped with secondgeneration airborne collision avoidance systems have been banned from flying above 8,400 metres and from taking off or landing at major domestic airports between 8am and 9pm, according to a directive issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The move is designed to reduce the possibility of jet collisions following a crash in central Europe in July between a cargo plane and a passenger jet, said China Daily.
Some small planes in China, mainly operating on regional routes, are not equipped with the system. China Southwest Airlines said it has spent US$1m to install the systems on all its aircraft, while China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines were also reported to have the system on their fleets.
