During the first half of this year, a total of 53,302 people were killed in 447,234 workplace accidents, Wang Xianzheng, head of the State Administration on Workplace Safety, told a symposium on safety held in July. However, he claimed China's record was starting to improve - apart from civil aviation and road accidents, the number of accidents in other sectors had declined compared with the same period last year.

China launched two nationwide campaigns on workplace safety supervision, in March and June. In the second half of the year, the administration's major task is to promote awareness of the new law on workplace safety and see to its implementation.
