Beijing accused of breaking WTO promises
1 October 2002
A report by the US Chamber of Commerce assessing China's record in honouring its World Trade Organisation commitments accused Beijing of using delaying tactics to avoid opening its agricultural sector, Reuters reported. The report also criticised China for its continued use of agricultural export subsidies, which it had undertaken to end, and for its clumsy implementation of new rules on imports on soybeans, which were jeopardising US exports worth over US$1bn a year. The report also found fault with China's implementation of the opening of its insurance and banking sectors and with the continuing rampant violation of intellectual property rights. However, it praised China for moving quickly to develop regulations giving effect to many of its commitments.
