China's trade minister, Shi Guangsheng, has warned the US not to impose any new restrictions on textiles imports once the present quotas end in 2005 under the Multi-Fibre Arrangement. He said China had sent officials to Washington to argue against new quotas being imposed as demanded by the US textile and clothing industry. The American Textile Manufacturers Institute wants quotas
imposed under the special safeguard provisions in China's WTO accession, which can be imposed if an importing country believes shipments are causing market disruption.
