The US State Department has advised Americans to defer non-essential travel to China. It also authorised the departure of their nonemergency employees and their family members from China.

Malaysia banned tourists from mainland China in a bid to stop the spread of Sars. Those travelling for government or business reasons were still allowed to enter the country so long as they carried health certificates stating that they had no symptoms related to the disease. The Philippines has imposed similar restrictions.

On April 11, China stopped tour groups travelling to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand because they were all infected with Sars, said Xinhua. The ban appeared not to affect individual or business travellers.
