The Asian Development Bank has approved a loan of US$83m for a wastewater treatment project in Wuhan, Hubei province. Under the project three wastewater management plants will be built, together with pumping stations and more than 100km of sewers. Counterpart funding is being provided by the wastewater company, rather than the government.

In 2000, Wuhan's wastewater discharge totalled 2.05m cubic metres a day, of which 6 per cent was treated. The city plans to increase that proportion to about 70 per cent by 2010, and the works being assisted by the ADB will allow Wuhan to treat 56 per cent of wastewater by 2007.
