Ningbo raises port capacity

Throughput capacity at Ningbo port is to be boosted by 4.5m teu in the next five years.
The city's port authority has started building five berths at Beilun port at a cost of some
Yn6bn. China Merchants International Holdings has also started construction of four berths, the first two of which should be operational in mid-2005. Each berth is expected to handle about 500,000 teu.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's The Standard reported that Hutchison Whampoa has been holding talks with Ningbo Port Authority to expand its container terminal operation. Hutchison Port currently has a 49 per cent stake in Beilun.
