20 January 2004

China's Foreign Ministry announced that President Hu Jintao would take a 10-day trip to France, Egypt, Gabon and Algeria starting January 26.

The trip is in part intended to isolate Taiwan in the lead up to Presidential elections on the island in March.

President Hu will also concentrate on energy deals, including development of nuclear energy in co-operation with France and hydrocarbon deals with Algeria and Gabon.

During his visit, Hu will become the first Chinese leader to address the French parliament.
