War shrine targeted by Chinese hackers

A Tokyo shrine dedicated to Japan's war dead said that its website had been the target of repeated attacks by hackers based in mainland China. Officials from the shrine said coordinated attacks had at times made the site inaccessible. The shrine, which includes dedications to several convicted war criminals, has long been a source of friction between China and Japan. Meanwhile in a separate development, state media reported that China had attained the dubious distinction of becoming the world's second largest source of spam or unsolicited emails. According to the Internet Society of China's anti-spam team, some 180 out of 400 IP addresses blocked by the International Anti-Spam Organization in November 2004 were Chinese.
