Crackdown shuts 12,575 net cafes

China closed down 12,575 Internet cafes in the last three months of 2004, most of them for operating without licenses, Xinhua reported. Many were also located too close to schools, the agency reported, citing a government effort to create a "safer environment for young people in China". Rules introduced in 2002 demand that net cafes be at least 200 metres away from middle and elementary schools and restrict hours when children can use them.
