UK, China discuss cooperation and trade

On his first visit to China, UK chancellor Gordon Brown discussed cooperation, trade and currency issues with Beijing officials. The two sides said they would work together to address the challenges of globalization and will issue a joint statement to that effect at the October G20 ministerial meeting. Brown also discussed proposals to export British educational products that help the Chinese learn the English language. When he arrives in Shanghai later, Brown is expected to push for the proposed $2.8bn deal between MG Rover and the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, in which SAIC would take a 70% stake in a new joint venture with MG Rover.
