China school flood may have killed 200

Floodwaters that swept through a packed primary school in the town of Shalan in Heilongjiang province may have killed 200 people, mostly children, according to media reports. A torrential downpour of 200mm (7.8 inches) in 40 minutes unleashed the flood which state media described as the worst in the area in 200 years. The town's party officials and police chiefs are being investigated for "negligence in offering timely rescue", state media reported.
