Mugabe seeks aid in China

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has started a week-long visit to China to discuss possible financial aid and is expected to ask for food and oil to help alleviate the nation's economic crisis, state media reported. Mugabe blames the crisis on Western sanctions imposed after the government began seizing white-owned farms several years ago. Zimbabwe government figures indicate that China has entered joint ventures and loan agreements with Harare worth US$100 million since 1980. It also has assisted in training the African nation's army. Zimbabwe is considered a pariah state by many countries, so it looks East to old friends, like China.
