Chinese art fetches US$3.7 million

A colored-ink drawing depicting 40 parrots in a grove, by 86-year-old artist Wu Guanzhong, was sold through the newly founded Beijing Poly Art Auctions Co for US$3.7 million, a world record for any piece of contemporary Chinese art, state media reported. A Chinese ink drawing of birds by 12th century Emperor Huizong is the previous record holder at US$2.77 million in 2002. The 1939 oil, entitled "Portrait of Ms Jenny," by Chinese artist Xu Beihong (1895-1953), was sold Sunday for US$2.7 million.
