Two experts have warned of possible chemical contamination entering the food chain in north-eastern Heilongjiang province from the toxic slick on the Songhua River, the Financial Times reported. Gao Zhong, an expert from the non-governmental Clean Water group, and Cui Guangbo, of Nanjing's Hehai University, said the slow-flow of the river increases the potential of chemical absorption in the land, facilitating toxins entering the food chain. Twelve days after an explosion upriver at a petrochemical plant, poisonous benzene and other toxins have reached the outskirts of Harbin, which has been without water for four days. Russia is considering a state of emergency for the border city of Khabarovsk.
