Three Gorges official faces death

Land Resources Bureau official Du Jiang has been sentenced to death for embezzling US$346,505 in resettlement funds earmarked for displaced people from Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric dam area, in the biggest such case revealed so far, reported state media. Du was given a two-year reprieve, which typically results in commutation to life imprisonment. There have been 327 cases of embezzlement of resettlement funds discovered involving 369 suspects in the US$22.2 billion dam project on the Yangtze.
