In the wake of the decision to resume publication of the recently banned Bingdian Weekly, leading mainland intellectuals voiced concern over the lack of free speech and academic freedom in an open letter to President Hu Jintao, the South China Morning Post reported. Thirteen liberal intellectuals appealed for a review of the country's propaganda apparatus, which inhibited the freedom of expression, saying that freedom of speech included granting the right of "wrong speech".
