China tightens textile controls

Foreign Trade

10 July 2006

The Ministry of Commerce plans to revise rules on textile export quotas in a fresh push to prevent quota speculation and streamline the market following last year's disputes with the US and Europe, state media reported. A number of problems have been reported with the Provisional Management Method for Textile Exports approved by the ministry in July 2005. Some companies boosted profits by speculating with their quotas while others left theirs untouched. The ministry is currently looking for input from industrial associations and textile companies. No timeline was offered for the revised rules.
