Paulson takes "generational" China view

Politics & Society

14 September 2006

US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson said a "generational" view should rule the US-China relationship. In a speech Wednesday, ahead of his first trip to China in his new position, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs said he would tell Beijing that "we want you to succeed," the Financial Times reported. Paulson laid out the framework for a new US strategy towards China that would see the two countries work as co-operative partners. "The United States has a huge stake in a prosperous, stable China - a China able and willing to play its part as a global economic leader." Paulson's speech did not dwell on currency reform in China but rather included such moves as part of a necessary plan towards more market-based management of the economy.
