China wants space treaty

China said it is willing to cooperate with other countries to prevent a space arms race, AP reported. "Since other countries care about this question and are opposed to weaponization of space and an arms race in space, then let us join hands to realize this goal," said Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Jiang Yu Thursday. The statement came in the wake of criticism after China fired an anti-satellite missile, which destroyed a defunct Chinese weather satellite, on January 11. The US has opposed Chinese and Russian calls for an international space treaty in the past. The three countries are the only states to have shot down an object in space.
