Record spending over Chinese New Year

A record US$5.6 billion was generated in tourism revenues during the week-long Chinese New Year holiday, a year-on-year rise of 19%, state media reported. The National Tourism Administration said that 92.2 million tourists traveled across the country during the break, a jump of 17.7% from 2006. Retail sales of consumer goods rose 15% year-on-year to US$28.2 billion during the holiday, according to China's Ministry of Commerce.
