Google plans new research center

Google plans to open a research and development center in Shanghai this month as part of a push to eat away at Baidu's market leadership, the Wall Street Journal reported. The California-based internet search company did not say how much it plans to spend on the center or how many people it will employ, but a media relations official told the newspaper that the focus will be on research related to Chinese-language internet searches. The company said in April that it plans to become a market leader in China. Baidu took in 57% of internet-search revenue in China in the first quarter of this year, triple Google's 19% market share, the newspaper reported.
