China bans CFC production
2 July 2007
The last six Chinese factories producing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) an ozone-depleting substance (ODS), have agreed to stop production, marking the end of the major ODS production in China, Xinhua reported (in Chinese). A total annual production capacity of 122,000 tons will be phased out according to the deal signed by the State Environmental Protection Agency, China National Chemical Construction Company and the six factories. The move completes China's pledge to phase out CFCs under the 1991 Montreal Protocol on banning ODS two and a half years ahead of the schedule.
