The Starbucks coffee shop inside Beijing's Forbidden City has been closed, Xinhua reported (in Chinese). The American-owned coffee store was closed on Friday afternoon last week at the former imperial palace and its logo was removed from traditional Chinese-style window panes. A management representative at the Forbidden City said its had offered to continue serving Starbucks coffee alongside other drinks at a planned beverage store using a unified brand for the Forbidden City, but Starbucks declined the offer. Starbucks had been in the Forbidden City for seven years, but in recent years the location had come under attack from academics and online campaigners.
