Chinese-made tires recalled in the US

A tire importer in the US announced July 7 that it would recall 255,000 defective China-made tires for lacking a safety feature, AP reported. The company, Foreign Tire Sales Inc, was ordered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in June to recall as many as 450,000 tires that it bought from Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co since 2002. The tires, used in pickup trucks, vans and sports utility vehicles, were recalled because they did not have a feature that prevents tread separation. Foreign Tire Sales said the recall would cost US$20 million. Hangzhou Zhongce said it "had not found any evidence that the ... tires at issue contain any structural defects or are missing any safety features." The last months have seen a spate of product recalls caused by safety concerns over items made in China, ranging from pet food to toothpaste.
