Beijing slams Taiwan march for UN membership

The Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office said on Sunday that the authorities were "preparing for a serious situation" following rallies in Taiwan in support of United Nations membership for the island. Shanghai even held an air raid drill on Saturday, described by state media as the biggest since 1949, to coincide with the rallies, the Financial Times reported. Organized by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the opposition Kuomintang, the two rallies were scheduled to have the maximum impact ahead of this week's UN General Assembly. Some of Taiwan's allies attending the meeting plan to apply for the island to be given UN membership under its own name. Many have dismissed the plan as a political ploy, as there is almost no chance of the application getting UN backing.
