Two Shanghai corruption cases go to trial

Courts have begun proceedings against two officials involved in corruption cases in Shanghai, the South China Morning Post reported. The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court tried Zhe Wenjin, who headed the Shanghai Housing and Land Administration's land-use management section, for taking bribes worth US$530,000. Zhu is said to have accepted property, cash and gifts from property developers in return for expediting approval of land deals. He was detained last November. His trial is part of a probe into the abuse of Shanghai's pension fund by former city party secretary Chen Liangyu, who is awaiting trial. Separately, an Anhui province court Monday tried Yu Zhifei, general manager of the city's Formula 1 racing operations, who allegedly embezzled US$140,000. Prosecutors also say Yu stole US$110,000 from Shanghai's Shenhua Football Club, which he managed, and another US$250,000 in 1999. Investigators say he used the funds to pay for a house.
