Local coffee shop replaces Starbucks in Forbidden City

Consumer/Retail/F&B

25 September 2007

Starbucks' coffee shop in the Palace Museum inside the Forbidden City in Beijing has been replaced by a new local Chinese coffee shop, state media reported. Its replacement, the Forbidden City Cafe, serves traditional Chinese tea as well as coffee and is part of a larger store selling souvenirs to tourists. The US coffee chain had run its outlet in the Forbidden City since 2000. The store closed in July amid a public campaign waged by academics and bloggers against its presence in the former imperial palace.
