The government of Nanjing, Jiangsu province has announced plans to build a new bridge over the Yangtze River to help ease traffic burdens on the existing Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, Oriental Morning Post reported (in Chinese). The 9.5-kilometer bridge will be in Nanjing's downtown area, 2-3km upstream from the old bridge to share increasing vehicle traffic across the river. Construction will begin at the end of 2008, and should be finished in 2011. The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, built in 1968, was the first double-decker, double-track highway and railway bridge to be designed and built in China.
