China rejects sanctions against Myanmar

United Nations envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari concluded talks with China Thursday, with no indication that Beijing had agreed to exert more pressure on the country's military government, Reuters reported. Gambari and the US have pressed India and China to take tougher stances toward Myanmar through sanctions, but China has preferred talk, rather than sanctions, as the best approach. Beijing joined Western powers in denouncing Myanmar's crushing of pro-democracy demonstrations in a statement by the UN Security Council, but stressed it did not mean China would back legally binding resolutions against Myanmar.
