Hundreds arrested in product safety drive

A total of 774 people were arrested for alleged involvement in selling and making counterfeit or low-quality food and drugs, the Wall Street Journal reported. The arrests were announced by Li Changjiang, who heads China's quality inspection agency, AQSIQ. The arrest are the latest in the government's campaign to crack down on product safety scandal involving Chinese exports that plagued foreign consumers and domestic manufacturers this summer. Chinese factories have been blamed for dangerous practices such as using lead paint, resulting in the recall of millions of toys. Another round of toy recalls was announced in the US last week.
