China Mobile successfully tested a mobile phone tower installed on Mount Everest in preparation for the Olympic torch relay, state media reported. The tower, which is intended to meet the needs of mountaineers and scientists during the events, stands at an altitude of 7,000 meters. Together with two existing towers on Mount Everest, the new tower allows China Mobile to provide service to the mountain's entire trail area. Organizers said the flame will be brought to the peak of the mountain during the 53,000-kilometer, 130-day torch relay. The tower was dismantled for the winter immediately after the successful test, and will be reassembled before the relay next summer.
