A US congress-appointed commission said that Chinese espionage is the biggest threat to US technology, AFP reported. The United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission said in a report to Congress that Chinese spies pose "the single greatest threat to US technology," and were straining the US counterintelligence establishment. The commission proposed a trace of the country of origin of all US weapon system components and a full assessment of US intelligence abilities related to the Chinese military. It also recommended additional funding for US export control enforcement. China's "control and manipulation of information" made product-safety controls in the US impossible or difficult, it said. According to the report, industrial espionage is a significant factor in China's military modernization and has helped Chinese companies gain new technologies. It said US computer networks were being targeted by Chinese " cyber attacks."
