HK groups protest Shenzhen activist's stabbing

Hong Kong groups protested the stabbing of a labor leader in Shenzhen, ahead of a new labor law on the mainland that takes effect in the new year, the Wall Street Journal reported. Huang Qingnan, who runs the Dagongzhe counseling center for migrant workers, which provides labor law education services, was attacked by two men with knives. He is now hospitalized with severe injuries. Hong Kong labor groups have called on Chinese authorities to reopen Huang's center, provide him with medical treatment and improve protection of civic groups. Dagongzhe advised workers on seeking fair compensation from employers, among other things. The new labor contract law, which comes into effect on January 1, will make it more difficult for employers to hire and fire staff.
