Leukemia drug-maker fined, shut down
14 December 2007
State-owned pharmaceutical company Shanghai Hualian has been fined the maximum amount under law and forced to shut down for making tainted leukemia drugs that caused partial paralysis in dozens of patients, the Wall Street Journal reported. All sales of the drug were suspended in July by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) which after an investigation described Hualian's actions as a "systematic" cover-up. In September, the SFDA forbade the company to produce the drug altogether. The tainted drugs are thought to have affected over 100 people across China.
