Air polluters named, shamed on website

Forty multinational companies have been "named and shamed" as air polluters alongside more than 4,000 Chinese enterprises on a website set up by a leading environmental activist. French tire manufacturer Michelin and German chemical company BASF both appear on the Chinese-language China Air Pollution Map, the Financial Times reported. Subsidiaries of large Chinese companies such as Sinopec and PetroChina are also featured. The map was created by Ma Jun, founder of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs. It follows last year's Water Pollution Map, which named 9,000 companies, including Danish brewer Carlsberg. Companies can apply to be removed from the websites once they fix the problems and arrange for a third party to audit operations. BASF said it was put on the list following a leak at a Shanghai plant in June, which was quickly dealt with.
