Bali talks deliver climate change negotiations pact

Climate change talks involving 190 nations ended in Bali on Saturday with a commitment to launch negotiations on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, Reuters reported. The talks overran their Friday deadline after China and India, respectively the world's second- and fourth-largest emitters of greenhouse gases, said that rich nations must do more to take the lead on the issue. They wanted changes to the final text of the agreement so it reflected a commitment from the developed world to provide green technology and finance to help them address climate change. The deal came after the US staged a last-minute reversal and dropped its opposition to the changes. However, Washington officials said they still had their concerns about the "road map" for two years of negotiations on a new climate change treaty.
