Dow eyes coal-to-chemicals partnership with Shenhua

The world's second-largest chemical company, Dow Chemical, is considering developing a project to refine cleaner-burning fuel from coal in China. Dow boss Andrew Liveries told China Business Net (in Chinese) that his company has been discussing the project with China's major energy company Shenhua Group since 2005. The two companies recently completed a feasibility study of a possible coal-to-chemicals complex in Shaanxi province. The project, if approved by Chinese authorities, will be the largest foreign investment project in China, representing about US$8-10 billion, according to a person familiar with the situation. The current largest investment project, a refinery project between Sinopec and Kuwait, is worth about US$5 billion.
