Xinjiang bird flu outbreak 'under control'

An outbreak of bird flu in Turpan in the Xinjiang region has been brought under control, AP reported, citing state media. No human cases of the H5N1 virus have been reported in an outbreak that has killed 4,850 poultry. To prevent the disease from spreading, the city slaughtered 35,000 birds that had not migrated south because of a warm winter. The outbreak is the most recent since 9,830 ducks died in an outbreak in southern China in September. Most human cases of bird flu have been contracted through contact with infected birds.
