Study reveals PLA scenarios for N. Korea

Politics

10 January 2008

The UK newspaper the Daily Telegraph cited a new report as saying Beijing would send People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops to North Korea if it feared a rapid erosion of Kim Jong-il's rule. The report by two Washington-based think-tanks quoted PLA academics who outlined "missions" to North Korea based on specific scenarios, including humanitarian and law and order crises as well as a military strike on North Korean nuclear facilities. However, the academics noted that China's main concern was stability, and that it would not intervene to replace Kim Jong-il, or to prevent his replacement by another leader.
