Wen: China to freeze energy prices

January 10, 2008

Premier Wen Jiabao announced freezes on energy prices Wednesday in response to growing public concern over inflation, the New York Times reported. The announcement came after a recent survey showed rising consumer prices to be the leading public concern in China. Oil products, natural gas and electricity will see no price increases in the short term. The price freezes will also cover public transportation in cities, medical treatment and fertilizers. The central government promised "stern penalties" for non-compliant companies.
