Beijing to educate farmers on land rights

Agriculture

16 January 2008

Beijing will increase efforts to educate farmers on property rights and encourage them to resolve land disputes legally, AP reported. The campaign will make use of media training classes and village banners, officials said. Land used by the more than 800 million Chinese farmers is owned by the state, but new property rights laws stipulate that farmers are entitled to compensation if the land is taken away. In reality, farmers often receive little or no compensation in illegal land seizures. An official from the Ministry of Land and Resources said the 100-day campaign would ensure land laws are being enforced and violators are punished.
